MBBS Scholarships

MBBS Scholarships is affiliated to the University of Central Lancashire, East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust and North Cumbria Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust. The above mentioned foundations offers MBBS scholarships for UK students from the North West of England, especially from backgrounds under-represented at university.

Regional Scholarships for East Lancashire and West Cumbria
Mackenzie Scholarship – offered to applicants from East Lancashire.
Jointly funded by the University and East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust.

Dr Kate Granger Scholarship – offered to applicants from Cumbria, particularly Copeland or Allerdale. Jointly funded by the University and North Cumbria Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust.

These two scholarships cover all tuition fees for the duration of the five year programme and clinical placement costs in the respective Trusts.

Scholarships for Widening Participation Students
Livesey Scholarships – offered to two students who successfully complete the Pathways to Medicine Programme.

The Pathways to Medicine programme has been developed for students from the North West of England who are from backgrounds that are under-represented at universities. It provides advice, skills and support to strengthen your application to medicine and related professional healthcare courses.

The scholarships will cover all tuition fees for the duration of the five-year course.

Through all these scholarships, the University and Trusts aim:
To support local, disadvantaged students in their application to medicine.
To support those whose circumstances mean they are unlikely to study medicine despite being academically capable.
To attract local doctors to NHS employment in the region.

How to apply

You should apply for MBBS via the UCAS system. No additional scholarship application is required.

As part of the awarding of each scholarship, all applicants will be invited to complete a widening participation form. Each applicant who is shortlisted for interview will take part in the same competitive selection process outlined in these documents.

In the awarding of the MBBS scholarships preference will be given to successful applications from a widening participation background. The final offer of an MBBS scholarship is based on ranking after interview and additional weighting.

Eligibility

Here is the list of eligibility criteria for the different available scholarship

Dr Kate Granger Scholarship: be resident in Copeland or Allerdale. If no successful applicant from Copeland or Allerdale is eligible then students from the wider Cumbria region will be considered. From 2023, the eligible applicant will reside in the new Cumberland region.

Mackenzie Scholarship: be resident in one of the following areas; Blackburn with Darwen, Hyndburn, Accrington, Burnley, Pendle, the Ribble Valley and Rossendale.

Livesey Scholarships: successfully completed the Pathways to Medicine programme.

For all scholarships: have met or are expected to meet the MBBS entry requirements.

We particularly welcome applications from:

Members of disadvantaged groups (including care leavers, estranged students, young adult care giver)
Low income families
First generation higher education participants

Important information

Any applications which do not meet the stated criteria will be rejected. If it transpires that any information provided on the form is falsified this will result in removal from the process. The decision of the panel is final and there is no appeals process.

We can only take enquiries from the applicant themselves and not from a parent, guardian, care giver or friend. This support will be provided to the student on an annual basis for the duration of the scholarship period.
